Delegates practice what they preach

No strangers to political involvement, State Council members took time out of their schedule on Saturday afternoon to set up a phone bank to urge voters to approve Prop. 47, the $13 billion state school bond, and Prop. K, a local school bond measure in Los Angeles. More than 2,046 calls were made.

As a body, Council took the following actions:

  • Voted unanimously to denounce San Diego Superintendent Alan Bersin for his destructive education policies that are beginning to be replicated in other parts of the state. Council also voted to support two school board candidates who could topple Bersin's regime.
  • Voted to spend up to $1.5 million from the CTA Initiative Fund to help raise voter turnout in the November election in hopes of winning passage of Prop. 47.
  • Voted to urge the state Board of Education to declare a moratorium on the High School Exit Exam and use the time to conduct a study of the consequences it would have on disadvantaged students.
