CTA was successful in blocking legislative proposals to give pensions to school board members and allow increases in the per diem stipend paid for their attendance at board meetings.
CTA pointed out that school board service is supposed to be service performed for the community, not work from which compensation and pensions are derived. Further, money for both comes from the same fund used to educate students.
At CTA's request, the pension authorization was deleted from a pending bill and the bill authorizing retroactive board meeting pay increases was vetoed by Gov. Davis.
"Given the current fiscal situation facing many school districts throughout the state, I am not able to support the significant retroactive compensation increases proposed in this bill," said Davis in his veto message.
"These increases could shift funding away from the classroom."
