Budget Overdue

Although the state Senate gave its approval to the proposed budget in July, the measure has been held up in the state Assembly, where it needs at least four additional votes for passage.

Thus far, Democrats have supported the proposal that would provide K-14 education with a 2 percent cost-of-living adjustment and other new moneys and preserve Proposition 98's funding guarantees to schools, despite the state's dire fiscal condition.

An analysis of the state budget will be featured in the Educator once the spending plan is finalized.
