Solving math with riddles

Riddle Math: Using Student-Written Riddles to Build Mathematical Power is a math resource book for elementary school teachers written by Carl M. Sherrill, a member of the Calistoga Teachers Association.

It links children's natural love of riddles and puzzles with standards-based concepts and basic skills practice, helping students to become critical thinkers. The goal is to help students develop a repertoire of hands-on problem solving strategies, and the ability to represent mathematical ideas using concrete materials. The lessons address all mathematical strands with an emphasis on algebra, number logic and language.

Sherrill, who teaches at Calistoga Elementary School, spent several years testing the lessons in his own classroom, and had other teachers at six schools pilot lessons. As a result, the book is teacher-friendly.

Available for $21.95, plus $3.75 for shipping and handling, it can be ordered through Amazon.com or by calling Morning River Publications at (800) 852-4890.
