What's the law?

Under what conditions can students be searched and how should the search be handled? If a student misbehaves or commits a crime, what disciplinary action should be taken? How should schools handle outsiders who are causing problems on campus? What are the liabilities of students and parents if a student commits a crime on campus?

The answers to these questions and more can be found in Law in the School by the office of California Attorney General Bill Lockyer. The book is designed to provide teachers, administrators, school safety personnel and law enforcement with information about the most recent California laws and court decisions that will help deal effectively with behavioral problems and criminal activities on campus.

Copies, which cost $8.95, are available from the California Department of Education's Publication Unit at (800) 995-4099, or write CDE Press, California Department of Education, P.O.
