Jim Burke, a member of the Teachers Association of the San Mateo Union High School District, has written a book to help teachers quickly improve their students' reading skills.
Reading Reminders: Tools, Tips and Techniques is designed for teachers to read on the run and make every minute in the classroom count. It includes his best 100 techniques for teaching reading, complete with tools and tips on implementing them.
The book was written to help teachers who may have large and diverse classes of students with a wide range of reading abilities and needs. It covers:
- Teaching students to read a variety of texts, including Web sites, tests, literature and textbooks.
- Using a wide range of teaching and reading strategies based on current reading research.
- Anchoring teaching to state and national reading standards.
- Establishing and maintaining a comprehensive reading program that includes silent sustained reading and direct instruction.
- Improving students' ability to discuss and understand what they read.
- Increasing the amount of student writing.
Burke, an English teacher at Burlingame High School and the author of several books, is the founder and moderator of CATENet, an electronic roundtable designed to promote discussion among English teachers throughout California and the nation.
