A World in Motion combines the educational expertise of teachers with the engineering knowledge of industry professionals to get students in grades 4 through 8 excited about understanding the laws of physics, motion and flight.
Developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers, the program was created in response to the steady decline of engineering graduates in North America and is aimed at building interest in engineering and technology careers.
The curriculum includes kits with detailed instructions and booklets.
Challenge I is geared to grades 4-6. Students build a skimmer, jet toy or steel can rover and delve into principles of motion.
Challenge 2 involves seventh-graders in the creation of a new line of motorized toys. Besides learning about technical concepts, students engage in testing, experimentation and communication.
In Challenge 3, eighth-graders investigate the relationship between force and motion and the effects of weight and lift on a glider.
