The California Educator has won the Best in Show Award from the State Education Editors' nationwide competition for NEA-affiliate publications.
In addition, the Educator received two first-place awards and two merit awards at SEE's annual conference, held in Chicago before the NEA convention.
CTA's Web site www.CTA.org took first place in the E-Media Award category.
The Community College Association's publication Advocate, also produced by CTA Communications, won a merit award in the Best Newspaper category.
In explaining their choice of the California Educator as the top winner, the judges, all professional journalists, said, "Time and Newsweek should do so well" at covering the issues important to teachers and other education professionals. The prize for all-around excellence was based on design, layout, use of photography and visuals, writing and subject matter.
In addition to the grand prize, the Educator won the following categorial awards:
- First place in the News Story category for "Schools Cannot Ignore Poverty" (May 1999);
- First place for Best Use of Freelance for photos accompanying "Trouble in Paradise: Rural Schools Face Urban Problems" (March 2000);
- An award of merit in the Feature Story category for "Truth or Consequences: Some Students Buckle Under Pressure to Excel" (October 1999);
