Catch the Spirit is an eye-catching calendar for the 2000-01 school year that features stories of young people whose volunteer efforts have earned them recognition.
A companion booklet offers 12 lesson plans to coordinate with the monthly student profiles, as well as additional resources, tips and ideas to make community service a regular classroom activity.
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program calendar correlates volunteer projects to a holiday in each month. For example, on World Food Day, Oct. 16, students can read the profile of a young boy who planted a community garden that produced more than three tons of vegetables for a local shelter. The accompanying lesson plan asks students to research the problem of hunger in their communities, and implement a group service project as a solution.
Each month also features suggestions for community service projects that relate to that month¹s holiday or other special days. Teachers will need only one calendar to post where students can read it; student profiles can be photocopied from the lesson plan booklet.
Requests for kits, which cost $5 a set, should be submitted to the Points of Light Foundation at (703) 803-8171 or by e-mail to polfcat@aol.com.
