The No on Proposition 38 campaign is running television commercials that feature Governor Gray Davis and Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante pointing out the lack of student and taxpayer accountability inherent in Prop. 38.
In one of the commercials running statewide on English and Spanish stations, Governor Davis calls Prop. 38 "a giant step backwards."
"Prop. 38 will take money from public schools and spend billions on voucher schools, with no standards for students, no credentials for teachers, and no accountability to taxpayers," says Davis.
In a Spanish language commercial, Bustamante warns voters that Prop. 38 will hurt our schools and our children. He says the initiative "will take money from our schools and give it to voucher schools that have no standards."
"Let's help our schools, not abandon them," says Bustamante.
Under Prop. 38, voucher schools receive taxpayer money, but can make decisions in secret and are not required to have their finances audited. Paying for Prop. 38 will cost California taxpayers at least $3 billion, and not one dime will be spent on improving neighborhood public schools.
The No on Prop. 38 Committee is a coalition of parents, educators, business leaders and community organizations.
