Silent reading

The SSR Handbook: How to Organize and Manage a Sustained Silent Reading Program is a book by Janice Pilgreen, at the University of La Verne.

Based on the premise that it takes a lot of time, effort and know-how to put an effective silent reading program into practice, the book identifies eight factors that ensure success. It lists resources like support organizations, book clubs, magazine subscription titles, young adult book series in various genres, and lower-level books.

The paperback, which sells for $15, is available from Heinemann Boynton/Cook, 361 Hanover St., Portsmouth, NH 03801-3912; (603) 431-7894; or visit the Web site [www.heinemann.com].
