California's geology makes headlines when faults shift, volcanoes puff steam and waves crumble the coast. A book that explores the recent rumblings and tremulous past of northern and central California was been written by David Alt and Donald W. Hyndman, who wrote Roadside Geology of Northern California 25 years ago.
They decided on an updated publication because "The rocks we knew 24 years ago no longer look the same. Nor do they tell the same stories."
With expanded coverage, new maps and photographs, and the latest geologic interpretations, this guide describes the region's rocks and landforms - sea stacks along the north coast, tufa towers at Mono Lake, the flood basalts of the Modoc Plateau and the creeping fault of Carrizo Plain - in nontechnical terms.
The book contains geologic road guides for Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, Lassen Volcanic National Park, Lava Beds National Monument, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, Point Reyes National Seashore and the San Francisco Bay Area.
The book, which sells for $20, is available from Mountain Press Publishing Co., 1301 S. Third St. W., P.O. Box 2399, Missoula, MT 59806. For more information, call (800) 234-5308.
