CCA is expecting to gather a lot of previously unknown data from a membership survey that has been completed by full- and part-time faculty from throughout the state.
Two separate surveys were sent out to faculty to build a profile of faculty members. More than 1,500 full-and part-time faculty from throughout California have completed and returned the member survey that posed questions on everything from their satisfaction with their contracts to their ideal workload.
“We’re astonished by the returns. It’s not often that hundreds of people respond to a survey – any survey. I think this speaks to the engagement our members feel toward their profession,” said CCA President Ron Norton Reel.
Although local chapters of the Community College Association survey their members regarding contract issues, CCA leaders of the statewide organization decided to go beyond that to get a picture of faculty.
“I think it could be very interesting once we tabulate the responses. Even more, the data we get may also be useful in strengthening our collective voices,” Reel said.
Of particular use will be information from part-time faculty.
“There continues to be controversy over how many part-time faculty actually freeway fly in California, and we don’t have hard statistics,” said Pamela Hanford, a CCA board member who represents part-time faculty. “This will let us know about part-time members in our union and perhaps give us a basis of comparison for other part-time faculty in the state.”
There’s still time to complete the survey by going to the CCA website at www.ccafca.org.
