The Queen Mary in Long Beach provided the backdrop for CCA’s Annual Spring Council in April, where delegates said goodbye to President Carolyn Inmon and welcomed President-elect Ron Reel.
“Thank you for trusting me in this important position,” Inmon told Council. “It was an honor.”
During her two-year term, Inmon focused on improving communications and building stronger chapters. In that time, she started “CCA Briefly”a weekly emailed newsletter to chapter presidents and embarked on a “Listening Tour” in which she made over 70 visits to campuses around the state. Inmon also headed up the effort, along with CCA staff consultant Diana Lisi, to begin a yearlong “Academy for Strong Locals” that concentrated on training members for leadership roles.
Stronger organization
“It was a privilege representing CCA at the Board of Governors and at the Consultation Council and the Council of Faculty Organizations,” Inmon said. “But my real goal was to leave CCA a stronger organization. I think we’ve done that.”
The annual conference drew over 200 participants who took part in dozens of professional development workshops, helped set the direction for CCA for the next year, and saluted their colleagues in the special “W.H.O.” (We Honor Ours) Award ceremony.
Elected as president and vice president were Ron Reel and Lynette Nyaggah. Reel, a speech instructor at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, has previously served as CCA treasurer and a board member from District F. Nyaggah, a linguistics instructor at Rio Hondo College in Whittier, served most recently as board member for District I. Both have been active in their chapters and in the statewide organization for many years.
Re-elected to their positions were: Dewayne Schaeffer, District H; John Sullivan, District J; Deborah Blanchard, District K; Linda Borla, District L; Bill Hewitt, District N; and Wilhelmina Anthony, Women’s Director. Elected as Part-time Faculty Director was Pamela Hanford, an instructor at Shasta College.
We Honor Ours
One of the consistent highlights of the Spring Conference is the CCA W.H.O. Awards, and this year was no exception. More than 20 CCA members from chapters around the state were honored in the art deco stateroom of the former cruise ship. Honored as the 2007 CTA State W.H.O. Award recipient was CTA President Barbara E. Kerr, who leaves her position after serving two terms, as well as giving 22 years to the organization as an executive officer and board member. Lee Haggerty, CCA’s current vice president, received the CCA/CTA State W.H.O Award.
Local chapter W.H.O. recipients honored were: Karen Taylor, Butte College; John Fincher, Citrus College; Sean David Glumace, Coast CCA; William Gundelunas, College of the Desert; Richard Alman, Sierra College; Lynn Krause, Kern; Paula Jacobs, South Orange College; Carolyn Russell, Rio Hondo College; Joan Rudolph, Long Beach City College; Mike Glenn, Mendocino College; Al Nyman, Mira Costa College; Joan Sholars, Mt. San Antonio College; Fabian Biancardi, Riverside Community College; Joann Cataldo, San Joaquin Delta College; Christine Svendsen, Hartnell College; Elizabeth Waterbury, Shasta College; Janet Mazzarella, Southwestern College; Stelvio Locci, Hartnell College; Scott Suneson, Sierra College, part-time; and David Milroy, Southwestern College.
