SACRAMENTO — More than 100 community college faculty and students raised their voices and instruments at the state Capitol on Monday to celebrate the legislature’s designation of May 11 as the annual “California Community College Music Day.”
A resolution authored by Sen. Leland Yee (D-San Francisco-San Mateo) and backed by the California Teachers Association sets that date in perpetuity as a celebration of the musical artistry of staff and students at the community colleges.
During a ceremony on the floor of the state Senate, Sen. Yee presented to Chaumonde Porterfield-Pyatt and a contingent of student musicians the Senate Concurrent Resolution that establishes the annual day of musical celebration.
Porterfield-Pyatt, a member of the CTA/ABC Committee representing Higher Ed, and legislative advocacy representative for the Music Association of the California Community Colleges (MACCC), worked closely with Sen. Yee and his staff to secure the Legislature’s approval of the resolution.
On the day the resolution was presented, the San Joaquin Delta College Concert Choir, directed by Dr. Scott Bowen; the West Valley College Chamber Singers, directed by Lou De La Rosa; and the Consumnes River College Brass Ensemble, directed by Grant Parker, performed a range of tunes from classical to the popular.
“I wish to thank CTA for supporting SCR 36 (D-Yee),” Porterfield-Pyatt said. “I am especially proud today to be a CTA member, and I think it is wonderful that our special day of celebration is already printed in the CTA Pocket Calendar!”
