California Voters Reject Proposition 92

February 05, 2008

Sacramento – Today California voters joined teachers, business, firefighters, taxpayers, labor, seniors and community groups in rejecting Proposition 92 at the ballot box. Prop. 92 would have cost the state nearly a billion dollars over the next three years and would likely have led to tax increases and/or cuts to other critical programs including health care, public safety and public education, including K-12 and state colleges and universities.

“We strongly support community colleges, but Proposition 92 was a flawed measure that would have hurt California public schools and led to cuts in other critical programs,” said David A. Sanchez, president of the California Teachers Association. “We look forward to working with community colleges, lawmakers and all of our partners in public education to ensure our community colleges have proper funding and that all California students have access to the quality higher education they deserve.”

“Community colleges play an important role educating Californians, but Prop. 92 was not the answer to any challenges they face,” said Bill Hauck, president of the California Business Roundtable, whose organization includes improving California’s public schools as a paramount goal. “We need to work with educators, business and state leaders to create strong and stable funding for all higher education so that we can continue to build a strong workforce in the state.”

Other organizations opposing Prop. 92 included the California Taxpayers’ Association, California Faculty Association, League ofWomen Voters of California, the University of California, SEIU, Congress of California Seniors, California Business Roundtable, California State Conference of the NAACP, local chambers of commerce and community groups, among others.
