Education Coalition Launches Statewide Radio Ad Calling on Governor and Legislature To Stop Cuts to Schools

January 28, 2008

SACRAMENTO – Today the Education Coalition launched a 60-second statewide radio ad calling on the Governor and the Legislature to stop making drastic cuts to education funding. The ad features a student in an overcrowded classroom talking about the potential impact of the Governor’s proposed $4.8 billion funding cut to schools, the equivalent of raising all class sizes by 35 percent.

Below please find the text of the script. An audio version of the ad is available at www.protectourstudents.org.

California Education Coalition
“Think”
Radio: 60

(SFX: Classroom din starts out low and reasonable)

Student: You don’t have to tell kids like me California has the largest class sizes in the nation.  We live it – every day we’re in school.

(SFX: Classroom din begins to get louder…)

And, yes – it makes it harder to learn.

(SFX: …and louder…)

Harder to concentrate.

(SFX: …and louder…)

Harder to get the attention I need!

(SFX: …and louder…)

Harder…to…even…hear…myself…think! May I have a hall pass?

(SFX: Classroom door opens, and shuts – quiet is restored)

But, even with classes this overcrowded…
…politicians in Sacramento are talking about cutting education funding by almost five billion dollars.  Don’t they know those cuts could mean California loses up to a-hundred-and-seven-thousand teachers?  And class sizes could grow by a third?  That would be a giant step backwards for kids just like me.  Backwards into…

(SFX: Classroom door opens, loud din pours out, door quickly closes again; all is quiet once more)

…well…that.  So, call the Governor and your legislators. Tell them, “No more education funding cuts that hurt our kids…our schools…and our future.
