Los Angeles -- Daniel “Dan” Vaughn, an English/language arts teacher at West Middle School in the Downey Unified School District in Los Angeles County, was elected secretary-treasurer elect of the California Teachers Association at its quarterly State Council of Education meeting in Los Angeles Sunday.
Vaughn, a classroom teacher for 27 years, joins CTA President-elect David A. Sanchez and Vice President-elect Dean Vogel as leaders of the 340,000-member organization. The team will assume leadership of the state’s largest educator and educational support staff organization when they begin their 2-year term June 26.
“We welcome Dan to the leadership team as secretary-treasurer,” said David Sanchez, president –elect of CTA. “I know he will be a strong advocate for public education and will work tirelessly to improve the conditions of teaching and learning for students, teachers and Education Support Professionals.”
Vaughn was elected by CTA’s 788-member State Council of Education, the association’s top governing body of democratically elected representatives across California.
Currently a member of the CTA Board of Directors, Vaughn represents teachers in southeastern Los Angeles County. He is past president of the Downey Education Association and holds a bachelor’s in liberal studies and a master’s in school administration from Pepperdine University in Malibu.
We have several challenges facing public education,” said Vaughn. “I am committed to ensuring our public schools have the resources and support they need to provide all students with the best education possible.”
