California Teachers Urge Governor Schwarzenegger to Support and Sign Health Care Reform Bill AB 8

CTA President David A. Sanchez Released the Following Statement:

September 12, 2007

“With so many Californians, including many of our students, living without healthcare, and educators straining under the weight of soaring health care costs, Assembly Bill 8 is a real opportunity to move the fight for affordable health care forward. We commend Speaker Fabian Nunez and President Pro Tem Don Perata for their leadership, and call on Governor Schwarzenegger to sign the bill.

“The California Teachers Association has been advocating for health care reform for the past several years, because the health crisis is reaching into our classrooms. Children are absent or coming to school sick because their parents can’t afford the health care that they need. Teachers can’t teach to an empty desk.”

AB 8 would control the growth of health care costs, create a statewide purchasing pool, establish a minimum standard for employer contributions and expand coverage for the uninsured.
