Redlands Education Support Professional Elected to National Education Association Executive Committee
Paula Monroe is First CTA ESP Member to Serve on NEA’s Governing Body
Philadelphia, PA – For the first time in the history of the California Teachers Association, an education support professional was elected to the National Education Association Executive Committee. Paula Monroe, of Redlands, was elected without opposition this week by the more than 9,000 educators attending the NEA Representative Assembly in Philadelphia.
“This is an honor for CTA and we are very proud of Paula,” said David A. Sanchez, president of the 340,000-member CTA. “Paula is a strong leader and will be an effective advocate for education support professionals and all educators in Washington, DC. She will be a clear voice on those issues important to public schools, including our efforts to ‘Erase, Rewrite and Reauthorize’ the No Child Left Behind Act so it will help rather than punish students.”
“This is a tremendous privilege for me,” said Monroe, who until last June when CTA expanded membership to include ESP, was president of the California Education Support Professionals. “For years, I’ve been representing ESP and working with CTA on various projects and committees. I’m happy to now have the opportunity to represent all members of the education family.”
Monroe, who served six years on the NEA Board of Directors and seven years as president of the Redlands ESP Association, is a high school secretary in the Redlands Unified School District. She says changing NCLB to make it more responsive to the needs of students, teachers and schools is her number one priority. She also wants to work for health care reform.
Monroe assumes office September 1. She will serve a three-year term. The nine-member NEA Executive Committee, which also includes the NEA President, Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer, overseas general policy and interests for the 3.2 million-member Association.
