Teachers Make Unprecedented One Million Calls to Voters in Massive Get-Out-The-Vote Effort

Informing Voters About Governor's Harmful Special Election Agenda and Urging Them to Defeat Proposition 74, 75 and 76 is Priority for Teachers

November 7, 2005

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sacramento -- Thousands of teachers determined to inform voters about the dangers of the governor's special election initiatives surpassed their goal this weekend of reaching 1-million voters, announced the 335,000-member California Teachers Association today.

"This is an unprecedented number of calls," said Barbara E. Kerr, president of the California Teachers Association, but teachers are determined to do their part to inform voters about the governor's deceptive and destructive agenda and make sure everyone gets to the polls on November 8."

Sunday afternoon, CTA tallies showed that 1,008,746 voters had been contacted in one-to-one conversations with teachers. Thousands of teachers have been volunteering after school and on the weekends in locations across California telephoning voters since September. Hundreds more will continue calling voters through Election Night.

Phone banking is just part of the GOTV grassroots effort by the teachers this weekend. Nearly 15,000 teachers, firefighters, nurses and other volunteers took to the streets this weekend, walking precincts and talking to voters in person.

"We have made an impressive number of calls in a short period of time, but we still have many, many more to make. The governor is counting on people not voting on Tuesday, but we want to make sure that they know the truth and vote No on his harmful measures," said Kerr.
