CTA President Calls National Right to Work Lawsuit Baseless and Politically Motivated

Statement from CTA President Barbara E. Kerr

September 22, 2005

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

"This is another politically motivated lawsuit that has no basis in fact or in law and that represents a waste of the valuable time of the courts and of taxpayer dollars. It is also a cynical attempt to promote a ballot initiative whose goal is to silence teachers so that they cannot take part in the debate over public policy on an equal footing with the corporations and special interests that finance organizations like the National Right to Work Committee.

"CTA has a long record of compliance with all legal requirements in regard to the collection of dues and their use for political purposes.  We are scrupulous in our record keeping and we bend over backwards to observe the rights of members and fee payers. Our process has been challenged in court many times by organizations with a political agenda, such as the National Right to Work Committee.  Our process has always been found by the courts to be in substantial compliance with the law."
