BURLINGAME – Stressing teamwork among parents, students and educators, a major California Teachers Association advertising campaign being launched today says children succeed in school when families are involved with their child’s education.
“A child’s first teachers are family members,” CTA President Barbara E. Kerr says in one of the campaign’s radio spots. “Your attitude toward learning will affect how well your kids do in school. If you show that you care how well they do, your children will try harder.”
Kerr said the statewide print and radio ads are part of CTA’s annual back-to-school commitment to spreading the collaboration message to diverse communities. The radio ads, which also use local teachers to convey learning tips, will air today through Sept. 26 on 19 general interest and 21 ethnic radio stations – including Spanish- and Asian-language stations. Print ads will also appear in September in 41 ethnic newspapers, including African American, Spanish, Native American, Chinese, Indian, Korean, Vietnamese, Filipino and Thai publications.
“Al empezar este nuevo año escolar, colaboremos todos para darles a nuestros hijos la mejor oportunidad de triunfar,” CTA Vice President David A. Sanchez, who is bilingual, says in one spot airing on Spanish radio. “As we start the new school year, let’s work together to give our children the best opportunity to succeed.”
The ads highlight several learning tips for families: attend parent conferences with teachers, set a fixed time in a quiet place for homework, keep close track of a child’s progress in school, be enthusiastic about learning. To listen to or read the radio spots, go to the CTA website here, or click on the “Family Involvement Tips” icon and the “Media” section.
“Students of all ages and grade levels,” Kerr concludes in one ad, “do better when their family is involved.”
