FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Glendora - Leaders from teacher unions throughout the area will meet with five state legislators on Saturday morning to discuss the future of education in California as the Legislature contemplates cuts that could severely damage schools and send the state into an education recession.
"Teachers feel it's critical to meet with these legislators now to discuss the future of education in our state and to urge them to protect public schools from harmful budget cuts," said Don Bridge, President of the Associated Chino Teachers.
Legislators and officials scheduled to participate in the meeting are: Dennis Mountjoy (R-Monrovia), Ed Chavez (D-La Puente), Bob Pacheco (R-Walnut), Gloria Negrete McCloud (D-Chino), and John Chiang, Chair of the State Board of Equalization.
Teachers are deeply concerned that the Governor has proposed cutting almost $7 billion dollars from public education over this year and next, including $2.7 billion in midyear cuts for 2002-2003. The California Teachers Association is urging the legislature to keep cuts away from the classroom and to protect basic funding levels, maintain class size reduction programs, provide assistance to Schools of Greatest Need, and to protect Special Education.
The teacher participants represent local unions from throughout the area and are part of the California Teachers Association local Service Center One, which is hosting the roundtable discussion.
