Burlingame - It's not often Americans get to indulge in two great American pastimes on the same evening, but on Wednesday, teachers will come to the California Teachers Association headquarters in Burlingame to phone call on behalf of the Prop. 47 statewide school bond and root for the San Francisco Giants in their World Series bid.
"We're not 'monkeying' around with this one," said Carolyn Doggett, executive director of the California Teachers Association, in a clear reference to the Anaheim Angels' infamous rally monkey. "It's important to root for Bonds while we're calling for the passage of the state's school bond. We are so close to Election Day that we can't put aside contacting voters - even for the World Series. Instead we are going to combine our phone banking and cheer on the Giants at the same time."
In between making calls to California voters, volunteers will watch the game on a large-screen TV, munch on peanuts and Crackerjack, and have an opportunity to win Giants memorabilia.
The volunteer phonebankers will be joined by U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Atherton), 19th Assembly District candidate Gene Mullin, as well as local high school students who will don Giants regalia to support their team while supporting their local schools.
