Aliso Viejo - On Monday September 9th over a thousand Capistrano Unified Education Association members will rally in support of their association's bargaining positions. CUEA President Frank Weirath and California Teachers Association President Wayne Johnson will update members on the current status of the bargaining crisis and the support CUEA will continue to receive from CTA.
Capistrano Unified School District leaders claim to be in a "fiscal squeeze" in spite of the fact that the district received state funds for increased student population growth and at least $7.4 million in unrestricted funds for cost of living adjustments. Weirath points out that the district's "fiscal squeeze" claims don't ring true because CUSD continues to carry end of year reserves in excess of twice the state mandate.
Capistrano Unified School District is the only district in Orange County that has not settled their 2001-2002 contract with certificated employees. The average contract salary settlement in Orange County is 5%. Currently negotiations between the school district and the Capistrano Unified Education Association are at impasse and the fact-finding process will begin very soon.
