CTA Back-to-School Radio Ad Campaign Offers Families Student Learning Tips

Family Involvement is Crucial, Vice President Kerr Says on Air

August 27, 2002

BURLINGAME - A new, statewide back-to-school radio ad campaign features California Teachers Association Vice President Barbara E. Kerr offering families some proven tips on student learning.

"As this new school year begins, it's important to remember that it takes teamwork between teachers and families to get the job done right," Kerr says in one ad. "The fact is kids do best when they get encouragement in class and at home. The California Teachers Association is offering families some proven tips that can help you make a real difference."

The ads are part of the 330,000-member CTA's ongoing parental involvement campaign in cooperation with the California State PTA and community groups. The ads urge listeners to visit the CTA website at www.cta.org, where they can access the learning ideas by clicking on the "Family Involvement Tips" icon. Or they can call toll-free 1-888-756-KIDS to receive a free family tips brochure.

The tips include asking kids what they study every day, establishing a homework routine in a quiet study area, having parents meet teachers, and connecting school to everyday life situations.

"Just reminding your child that their success in school means a lot to you shows them that you value education," Kerr says in another of the ads. "If you care, they will care."

Kerr's 60-second radio spots began Monday and air through Oct. 6 on 20 radio stations across the state.

To listen to the current radio ads, go to the CTA website home page, click on "radio" under the press center menu, and choose the family involvement spots titled "difference" and "encouragement."
