IRVINE - CTA President Wayne Johnson and CTA Secretary-Treasurer, David Sanchez will speak in support of South Orange County teachers as they work to gain fair contract settlements with three Orange County school districts. Currently, Capistrano Unified Education Association, the Irvine Teachers Association, and the Saddleback Valley Educators Association have all reached impasse with their school districts in contract negotiations. Johnson and each of the three Orange County CTA association presidents will cite administrator ineptness, warped budget priorities and poor advice from School Services of California Inc., the consulting firm employed by the three districts, as the cause of the contract negotiation crisis.
While the average salary increase for the rest of Orange County is 5.09%, the school districts in Capistrano, Irvine and Saddleback Valley have offered the teachers 1% or less. In Irvine the district is attempting to dismantle the popular class size reduction school reform program. In spite of the districts' claim that there will be budget deficits next year, the association presidents contend that each of the three school districts have sufficient funds to settle the 2001-2002 contracts with fair teacher salary increases. Teachers also note that the superintendents from these districts are among the highest paid in the county and administer the only districts without teacher contract settlements.
