Gov. Gray Davis, celebrities and community leaders will join educators represented by the 330,000-member California Teachers Association at media events this week for the fifth annual National Education Association celebration of reading, Read Across America.
The event coincides each year with the birthday of the late children's author Dr. Seuss, who would have turned 98 on Saturday, March 2. Here is a sampling of planned media events:
Sacramento: California's First Lady, Sharon Davis, and CTA Vice President Barbara E. Kerr will read to students at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, in the library at Newcomer-Oak Ridge Elementary School, 4501 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Sacramento. On the same day, the Legislature will declare Friday, March 1, to be Read Across America day in the state.
Orange County: Students will be joined by local dignitaries and sports figures in a reading marathon that starts at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, and ends Friday afternoon at Buena Park High School, 8833 Academy Drive, Buena Park.
Compton: Gov. Davis, CTA President Wayne Johnson and actor Lou Diamond Phillips - the honorary chair of Read Across America in California - will be joined by other special guests who will read to hundreds of kids at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Compton. The event is at the headquarters of the Compton Unified School District, 604 S. Tamarind.
San Jose: Mayor Ron Gonzales will read Dr. Seuss books to students at 11 a.m. Friday at McCollam Elementary School, 3311 Lucien Ave., San Jose. He will be joined by teachers in full "Cat in the Hat" costumes.
Burlingame: Former San Francisco 49er all-pro Eric Wright and CTA Secretary-Treasurer David A. Sanchez will read "The Cat in the Hat" to students gathered at the Marriott Hotel on the first day of the CTA Good Teaching Conference on Friday. They will read at 11 a.m. in Salon 1 on the first floor of the hotel at 1800 Old Bayshore Highway, near the San Francisco International Airport.
San Diego County: Green eggs and ham are the lunch and a read-a-thon is planned Friday at Valley Vista School, 3724 Valley Vista Way, Bonita. U.S. Rep. Susan Davis will read to kids at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Imperial Beach School, 650 Imperial Beach Blvd., Imperial Beach.
