"Voice of the Teacher" on the Future of Education in California

“We’ve got to do better,” ad says

November 17, 2008

The California Teachers Association launched a new radio ad today to remind the governor and the Legislature that the future economic prosperity of the state and the future successes of our children rely on adequately funding education now.

“Continuing to slash education funding is a shortsighted way to solve the state’s fiscal crisis and threatens California’s future,” says CTA President David A. Sanchez. “Our state leaders must provide a real budget solution with both ongoing and long-term funding for our schools so that all students can receive the quality education they deserve.”

The ad features a classroom teacher remarking that she sees a glimpse of the future every day in the faces of her eighth-grade students.

“The better their education, the more opportunity for a successful tomorrow, and the better off we’ll all be,” she observes.

California’s ranking in per-pupil spending has slipped to 46th in the nation, resulting in larger class sizes, out-of-date textbooks and fewer important subjects like art, music and vocational education at many schools across the state.

“California can do better, our kids deserve better, and our future depends on it,” Sanchez says in the ad.

The 60-second ad begins today and will air for nearly 4 weeks on 74 radio stations statewide, including Spanish and Asian-language stations. The spot can also be found on CTA’s website at www.cta.org.
