SACRAMENTO - California Teachers Association President Barbara E. Kerr today kicked off a partnership with Staples to help raise money for public schools by recycling used inkjet and laser toner printer cartridges.
Kerr joined Staples executives to launch the "Staples Recycle for Education" program. For each used inkjet or laser toner cartridge that is recycled at a Staples store in California, the company will donate $1 to the CTA Institute for Teaching, which supports CTA's Schools of Greatest Need Initiative.
"With state budget cuts to education totaling more than $5 billion over the past three years, this program will help CTA's effort to support those students and teachers in schools that are working hard to improve against big odds," Kerr said. "We're pleased to have Staples as part of our team and commend their commitment to public education."
CTA's Schools of Greatest Need Initiative provides additional classroom resources, teacher training and family involvement programs to improve student learning at schools where students need the most help. The "Staples Recycle for Education" program hopes to raise more than $5 million nationwide. It runs through October 31 at the more than 160 Staples stores in California.
"This 'trash for cash' program not only helps our schools of greatest need, but also reduces environmental waste and teaches the value of recycling to all of our students," Kerr said.
