Volume 47, Number 1
Funds available right now
By Lynette Nyaggah, CCA Vice President
After a long and exciting day in front of a flip chart, the CCA Membership Committee and our membership guru, CCA Staffer Robin Devitt, came up with a new grant program for wall-to-wall locals. Many of our chapters are not tapping the potential of their part-time membership by including them in governance, bargaining, and the life of the association. These grants are meant to encourage this inclusion. The grants are done in two phases:
Phase 1: Initial pilot workshop event
Chapters offer a workshop on part-time retirement or unemployment. The purpose here is to provide essential information to faculty. Part-time faculty are often not aware that they are eligible for CalSTRS and that when they are not teaching they can apply for unemployment benefits. The costs of these events are funded by the grant.
Phase 2: Grant following pilot event
During this phase, locals establish a committee to work on recruitment, make sure they have part-time faculty on their governing bodies, and send part-time faculty to conferences to include them in the wonderful training opportunities CCA offers its members. They also hold workshops on the local campuses for part-time faculty. Grants are funded in the $2,000-$4,000 range depending on the size of the local.
Five chapters have already taken advantage of these grants – College of the Siskiyous FA, Gavilan College FA, San Bernardino CCD Chapter, Chaffey College TA, and South Orange CCD FA.They gave very successful workshops in 2010-2011 and this year they will be completing the grant by working on even greater inclusion of part-time faculty. So far, his program has been a testament to how effective wall to wall locals can be when ALL the faculty work together, and we expect that effectiveness will increase exponentially as they go
forward with this grant program.
Wall-to-wall locals interested in participating in this grant program should contact CCA Vice President Lynette Nyaggah (lnyaggah@gmail.com).
