Vanessa Perez | Hart District Teachers Association
Vanessa Perez is a staff member at Hart High School in the Santa Clarita Valley. Vanessa has taken a strong leadership role in the Hart High School community to respectfully promote the rights of all students, especially those in the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) community.
Vanessa has been the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) advisor for the last five (5) years and has been instrumental in organizing the annual Day of Silence on her campus. While some viewed the Day of Silence as a distraction to the educational environment, her persistence and determination helped educate the school community and helped the Day of Silence become a yearly reminder that all individuals need to treated with respect and compassion.
In 2012, her GSA students created a video called, “I Want to Know What It’s Like” using a wide variety of people from the Hart community. The video received national attention on YouTube and from the Huffington Post.
Vanessa was instrumental in guiding the student film makers in producing and presenting the video. It was a powerful tool that used students from all sectors of the school population along with administrators and educators to gain acceptance throughout the community.
It is my pleasure to present the CTA Nancy Bailey Leadership in Lesbian and Gay Issues Human Rights Award to Vanessa Perez!
