Physically/Mentally Challenged Students’ Issues Human Rights Award

Caroline Kris | San Ramon Valley Education Association

If you ever get the chance to visit Bollinger Canyon Elementary, you will find a diverse group of compassionate students and educators.  Creating this atmosphere is special education teacher, Caroline Kris.

Caroline serves as a role model and source of inspiration for the ongoing challenge of eliminating discrimination by providing equal educational opportunities for physically/mentally challenged students.

Caroline has created educational materials and activities, which connect general education students and special education students.  She models the use of “people first” language, which teaches students to communicate with each other using words that reflect what they have in common, rather than using labels that refer to their differences. She has also brought autism awareness to her school and provides training to her staff.

Caroline truly embodies the positive character traits of an educator committed to her students and profession.

I am proud to present the 2013 Physically/Mentally Challenged Students’ Issues Human Rights Award to Caroline Kris.

Every child deserves a chance to learn and no child succeeds alone.
