Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Transgender Issues

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender teachers, education support professionals and students face unique challenges in school and in society. Thanks to CTA and other education and human rights organizations, they are also making strides in the quest towards safer working and learning environments.

Two bills designed to provide safety for GLBT students

SB 48 - the Fair Education Act - legislation that was written to include social sciences in the curriculum on the contributions of GLBT people and prohibit discriminatory materials and instruction to be adopted by the State Board of Education. The bill has been signed and was passed by the governor, thanks to efforts of our members and Equality California.

AB 537 - the Student Safety and Violence Prevention provision - all California public schools have a duty to protect students from discrimination and/or harassment on the basis of sexual orientation or gender.
