Week two begins today for the State and interveners—CTA and CFT—in the Vergara v. State of California lawsuit for presenting our side of the case in the trial that started more than one month ago. Last week we heard from witnesses Robert Fraisse, a former school superintendent who testified to the effectiveness of the challenged laws, and to the chaos and harm that upending them would cause to students and schools. Teachers who testified included Christine McLaughlin – a respected educator with multiple honors, including being named 2013 Pasadena Unified Teacher of the Year, whom Vergara plaintiffs have falsely named as "ineffective." Dr. Jesse Rothstein, an economist from UC Berkeley, discussed his extensive research into the serious problems with using "value added" models to make decisions about teacher performance. This week's witnesses will include Shannan Brown, former California Teacher of the Year, and Betty Olson-Jones of the Oakland Unified School District.
