Two Measures Attacking Teacher Experience Killed in Committee

Two bills that would have expanded districts' ability to lay off educators without regard to their experience were killed in committee Wednesday.

SB 1185, by Senate Republican Caucus Chair Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar), would have allowed a school district to deviate from seniority in terminations, reappointments, and substitute service in relation to career pathway programs.

CTA-opposed AB 2240 by Assembly Member Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield) would have allowed districts to ignore teacher experience and lay off certificated personnel based on the community in which they work.

Every child deserves a chance to learn and no child succeeds alone.
