Senate Education Committee Approves CTA-Backed Bill to Allow All Students to Participate

On a 5-2 vote on June 12th, the Senate Education Committee approved CTA-backed measure, AB 1266 by Assembly Member Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco) that aims to protect the rights of transgender students access to sex-segregated school programs, activities, and facilities. These activities include athletic teams and competitions consistent with the student's gender identify, irrespective of the sex listed in the pupil's records.

The action sends the bill to the Senate floor, where the bill's approval would move it to the governor's desk.

Among other things, the bill would bar the often humiliating practice of forcing transgender students to use restrooms inconsistent with their gender identify.

The measure seeks to clarify current law that requires schools to involve transgender students in every aspect of school life.   Statutes clarified by the bill mandate that districts treat transgender students in accordance with their gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on their records.

Every child deserves a chance to learn and no child succeeds alone.
