The Senate Education Committee on June 11th approved CTA, CCA, and CFA-opposed AB 955 by Assembly Member Das Williams (D-Santa Barbara) that would set up a two-tiered system of coursework at the state's colleges and universities. Specifically, the measure would let students willing to pay more attend special sections of hard-to-get courses. The pay-to-play provisions undermine the principles behind public education – that it should be open to all. Instead, AB 955 would allow students able to pay more to jump ahead of their fellow students without similar financial clout.
The measure now goes to the Senate Appropriations Committee for further action, where CTA and other education and student groups will continue to try killing the bill.
