CTA-Supported Bill to Bar Social Media Access by Employers Advances

The Senate Labor and Industrial Relations Committee has approved a CTA-supported bill – AB 25 by Assembly Member Nora Campos (D-San Jose) – that would stop employers from forcing job applicants to provide interviewers with access to their Facebook pages and other social media.

The measure would prevent employers from demanding that interviewees give up their passwords so that the hiring company can page through their social media as part of the screening process.

Educators and others have been outraged by the practice, which is seen as an invasion of privacy.

The bill now moves to the Senate Appropriations Committee.
