CTA-sponsored Bill Would Provide Kindergarten for All Students

Assembly Education Chair Joan Buchanan (D-Alamo) and Assembly Member Shirley Weber (D-San Diego) have introduced CTA-sponsored AB 1444. The bill mandates kindergarten attendance for all five-year-olds so that every student can gain the advantages that come from attending that early grade.

Currently, kindergarten enrollment is voluntary, and youngsters whose parents do not enroll them generally lag in terms of achievement levels, oral language development, fine and gross motor skill development, and social/emotional development.

Read more about the bill and an important study from the Center for Public Education, "Starting Out Right: Pre-K and Kindergarten: Full Report." The study finds that missing kindergarten has the greatest negative impact on Hispanic children, black children, English language learners, and children from low income families.

Every child deserves a chance to learn and no child succeeds alone.
