Bills to Ease Voting Expected to be Signed by Governor

Both AB 131 by Assemblymember Das Williams (D-Santa Barbara) and SB 111 Senator Jim Beall (D-San Jose) seeking to make it easier for citizens to vote have cleared both houses and are headed to the governor's office to be signed.

AB 131 authorizes county officials to deem affidavits of registration to be complete even if the affidavit does not contain a place of birth. CTA supports the bill because the voter registration process should be open and encourage as many citizens as possible to register to vote.

SB 111 authorizes certain registered voters to use a signature stamp if the voter submits an affidavit or registration electronically utilizing a signature stamp that has been approved by the Dept. of Motor Vehicles and transmitted to the Secretary of State. Educators believe the voting process is an important freedom, should be easy, and accommodate the needs of voters.
