Assembly Education Okays Bill to Provide Educational and Support Services to Pregnant and Parenting Teens

To help young parents and teen-aged expectant parents, the Assembly Education Committee has passed a CTA-supported measure, AB 2111 by Assembly Member Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco), to re-establish an optional program to provide educational and support services to pregnant and parenting teens.

Teachers believe it is vital to offer a full continuum of services and support to teen parents to help them remain in school, prepare them for successful parenting, and take an active role in their child's development and education.

Currently, the California School Age Families Education (Cal-SAFE) categorical program exists without early learning and educational support programs and any requirements to meet basic health, safety, and quality standards.  AB 2111 provides a statutory framework for CAL-SAFE programs including specific health, safety and quality requirements, thus implementing changes designed to keep vulnerable children out of harm's way.

The bill also now goes to the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

Every child deserves a chance to learn and no child succeeds alone.
