Assembly Ed Committee Ready to Hear Professional Rights Bill

In small districts and counties a number of educators have been inappropriately kept at-will because school management wasn't sure if they would be needed next year. CTA believes those employees must be granted permanent status and only if absolutely necessary follow the lay-off proceedings in statute. CTA-cosponsored AB 1619,  by Assembly Member Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), would ensure districts grant permanent status to these certificated employees and that they follow the law by using existing layoff procedures when fiscal realities require a reduction in their workforce.

AB 1619 is scheduled for a hearing Mar. 26 in the Assembly Education Committee.
