Aside from holding the institutional knowledge of the organization, Retired members often serve CTA by volunteering in election campaigns and represent retirees' special needs on CTA's State Council of Education. Retired members may also form local chapters, drawing members from a CTA chapter, UniServ or Service Center Council area. As the fight for retirement benefits looms large in the California budget crisis, CTA provides members with the latest updates and separates the "myths from the facts" on employee benefits. There are several methods for paying your CTA/NEA-Retired dues:

• Pay a one-time lifetime membership dues amount of $450 by check or credit card
• Annual dues ($48 or $60) as follows:
  • A monthly deduction from your pension check of $4.00 for a total of $48
    OR
  • An annual payment of $60 by check or credit card
• Pre-retired members may join by paying a one-time lifetime membership dues amount of $450 by check or credit card

The Teachers’ Retirement Board voted to reduce their current investment rate assumption from 8% to 7.75%. This change will increase the current shortfall to the CalSTRS system by an additional $5 billion, leaving the system with a total shortfall of $45 billion. The TRB considered moving toward a lower investment rate of return of 7.5% but decided to take an incremental step and re-evaluate their rate of return with more data next year. Read more

Retired teachers are struggling to make ends meet thanks to two provisions of federal law. The Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) reduces the earned Social Security benefits of an individual who also receives a public pension from a job not covered by Social Security. The Government Pension Offset (GPO) reduces Social Security spousal or widow(er) benefits by 2/3 the amount of an individual's public pension. Contra Costa Meals On Wheels Facing Cuts, May Drop 200 Seniors
CBS San Francisco - April 22, 2013
Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa launched an urgent appeal for more donations Monday, saying that a funding shortage could force it to drop 200 people from its roster of 1,200 seniors receiving home-delivered meals. A crucial blow has been the loss of $100,000 in funding as a result of the federal budget sequestration. Read more

Bipartisan group of House members presses Medicare agency on cancer cuts

A solidly bipartisan group of more than 100 lawmakers is urging the Obama administration to reverse Medicare cuts to cancer clinics. The lawmakers questioned whether the Medicare agency can change the way the automatic cuts have been applied, so that cancer clinics won't be hit as severely. Read more
