ESP Day - May 21, 2013

CTA established a special day to honor our Education Support Professionals on the Tuesday of the third full week in May, during Classified School Employees Week. In 2013 that date will be May 21. Education Support Professionals

As educators, we know the crucial role played by the thousands of paraprofessionals, office workers, bus drivers, custodians and maintenance staff in our schools. Without the able contributions of our ESPs,our profession would be greatly impacted.

Meet CTA's ESP of the Year for 2013: Paula Monroe!

Paula Monroe, a formidable activist for the Redlands Education Support Professsionals Association (RESPA), has been named ESP of the Year for 2013.

One of Paula’s primary goals was to have ESPs become full members of CTA. In 2006, her goal became a reality when CTA included 5,000 ESPs as full CTA members! She accomplished this by becoming active on the state & national level, holding various positions & serving on numerous committees.

Paula made CTA history as the first CTA ESP member to be nominated by CTA State Council for the position of NEA Executive Committee member, where she is currently serving her 2nd term.

Paula is a founding member of the National Coalition of Classified Employees, which is a voice for one million classified/ESP members. She began her career with Redlands USD 20 years ago as a Computer Lab Assistant. Congratulations, Paula!

Education Support Professionals

The front line of public education begins with that first school bus ride in the morning, and ends when the custodian turns off the lights at night. As educators, we know the crucial role played by the thousands of paraprofessionals, office workers, bus drivers, custodians and maintenance staff in our schools. All told, Education Support Professionals (ESP) make up 40 percent of the total K-12 workplace. In fact, it would be difficult to imagine a school going for one day without ESPs.

When we talk about strengthening our schools, we need to strengthen everyone who works within them.  Along with recruiting and retaining quality teachers, we must recruit and retain quality education support professionals. To do that, it certainly means providing decent wages and benefits to the people who spend their days making sure our students are safe, well fed and learning.  

In addition to providing representation, advocacy, resources and training for the growing number of ESP members, CTA has established CTA ESP Day on the third full Tuesday in May during Education Support Professionals Week to honor these vital school employees. Each year, CTA also honors one of its own with the CTA ESP of the Year Award.
