The following statement was issued today by Dean E. Vogel, president of the California Teachers Association, in response to news that the new, nationwide class of nearly 5,000 National Board Certified Teachers includes several hundred from California:
“Becoming a National Board Certified (NBC) Teacher is a multi-year academic endurance program that pays off for our students, our communities and our profession in many ways. I want to congratulate the 345 California educators achieving national certification in 2012. These dedicated teachers should be commended for continuing to improve their craft. Studies show that NBC teachers have a profound and positive impact on student learning and achievement, and that nearly half work in at-risk schools in the U.S. The 5,636 National Board Certified educators now working in California are among the more than 102,000 who are making a real difference for students across the state and across the country.”
The independent National Board for Professional Teaching Standards was founded in 1987 to elevate the teaching profession. Its rigorous certification process provides educators with advanced knowledge and practices that they can use to transform classrooms and increase student achievement.
