*Update July 9, 2012: Initiative number - Proposition 30
LOS ANGELES – Dean E. Vogel, president of the 325,000-member California Teachers Association, released this statement regarding the CTA State Council of Education’s vote today to support The Schools and Local Public Safety Protection Act of 2012:
“The California Teachers Association is proud to join a growing coalition in support of The Schools and Local Public Safety Protection Act of 2012. This new compromise by the governor, legislative leaders and the Restoring California Coalition is a responsible and progressive plan that requires the wealthy pay their fair share in order to close the state budget deficit, restore funding to schools, colleges and essential public services, and put California on the road to recovery. We look forward to working with other labor unions and community groups to quickly qualify this initiative for the November ballot and make sure our students, families and communities get resources they need.”
CTA members at the State Council of Education meeting began signing petitions following the vote to support The Schools and Local Public Safety Protection Act of 2012. The Council, the union’s top governing body, is comprised of nearly 800 democratically elected teacher delegates from across the state.
