David A. Sanchez, president of the 325,000-member California Teachers Association, released this statement today regarding an attempt by a conservative, Virginia-based group that is trying to suppress Latino voters in the November Election. Latinos for Reform, which has direct ties to Republican politics, is airing a television ad in Nevada and is trying to run the ad in California urging Latinos not to vote in the upcoming election.
“As president of an organization that encourages all citizens to vote, I am appalled by this shameful attempt by an out-of-state organization to discourage California Latinos from voting, and I applaud Univision for refusing to run the ad here. This year, it is more important than ever for Latinos to vote and make their voices heard. CTA participated in a Latino-voter registration effort this summer precisely because there is so much at stake. It begins with our students and public schools, but it is really about our future. That’s why CTA is recommending that all Californians vote Jerry Brown for governor, Tom Torlakson for superintendent of public instruction, and Yes on Proposition 24. But most importantly, don’t let anyone stop you from voting. ”
