David A. Sanchez, president of the 325,000-member California Teachers Association, made the following statement today.
“The California Teachers Association commends Assembly Speaker John Pérez for putting forward a state budget plan that truly puts children and students first and prevents deeper funding cuts to our public schools and colleges.
“The Speaker’s California Jobs Budget, which focuses on creating jobs and preventing harmful cuts to schools, public safety, and programs for the poor, is a welcome step in the right direction. Putting people to work and investing in public education are the right moves to make in this economy.
“CTA also encourages lawmakers to repeal the corporate tax breaks handed out last year, as everyone must be paying their fair share. The state should not be giving tax breaks to oil companies and a handful of large corporations when student programs are being eliminated, class sizes are soaring, and thousands of classroom teachers and education support professionals are being laid off.”
